20 Years of ‘Sleeping with Ghosts’: Placebo Reflects on Their Iconic Legacy.

In 2003, Placebo released Sleeping with Ghosts, a groundbreaking album that not only redefined their sound but also solidified their status as one of the most influential alternative rock bands of their time. Now, 20 years later, the band reflects on the lasting impact of the record, and how it shaped both their career and the broader landscape of alternative music.

Sleeping with Ghosts marked a significant evolution for Placebo. While their earlier albums had already garnered a loyal fanbase, this release showcased a more mature, experimental side of the band. With tracks like “The Bitter End,” which became a massive hit, and “Special Needs,” a haunting exploration of love and memory, the album touched on deep emotional themes that resonated with listeners across the globe. Its mixture of electronic elements, atmospheric guitar work, and Brian Molko’s distinctive vocals created a sound that felt both raw and otherworldly.

Reflecting on the album’s 20th anniversary, Molko and bassist Stefan Olsdal have shared personal insights into its creation. Molko described the album as a “turning point” for the band. “It was a time when we were exploring new sonic landscapes, trying to push ourselves beyond what we had already done. It was liberating, but also terrifying,” he said in a recent interview. Olsdal added, “We were dealing with themes of loss, identity, and memory, which felt incredibly personal at the time. But looking back, I think that’s why it connected with so many people.”

To celebrate the milestone, Placebo has announced a special reissue of Sleeping with Ghosts, featuring remastered tracks, unreleased demos, and exclusive interviews. Fans can also expect a commemorative tour, where the band will perform the album in its entirety, a fitting tribute to an era-defining record that continues to influence new generations of musicians and fans alike.
