In a heartwarming tribute to their late drummer Charlie Watts, The Rolling Stones hosted a star-studded concert on Saturday night at London’s Wembley Stadium. The event, titled “Charlie Forever,” celebrated Watts’ immense contributions to music and his lasting legacy as a cornerstone of one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
Watts, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 80, had been the rhythmic backbone of The Rolling Stones since 1963. The tribute brought together fans, friends, and fellow musicians to honor his life and career in a night filled with powerful performances and heartfelt memories.
Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood opened the show with a rousing performance of “Start Me Up,” followed by a touching speech from Jagger. “Charlie wasn’t just the heartbeat of the band,” Jagger said. “He was our brother, our friend, and the glue that held us together. Tonight, we celebrate his life with the music he loved.”
The event featured an incredible lineup of guest artists, including Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Ringo Starr, who joined the band for an emotional rendition of “Wild Horses.” Younger artists like Harry Styles and Billie Eilish also took the stage, showcasing Watts’ influence across generations.
One of the evening’s highlights was a video montage of Watts’ career, accompanied by a live performance of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by a choir and orchestra. The tribute also included anecdotes from band members and rare behind-the-scenes footage of Watts in the studio and on tour.
The night concluded with “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” as fireworks lit up the sky, symbolizing the joy Watts brought to millions worldwide. Proceeds from the concert will support music education programs, a cause Watts championed throughout his life.
“Charlie’s spirit lives on in every beat,” Richards said, closing the night. “This one’s for you, mate.”
