Radiohead’s Recent Activities and Future Prospects: A Comprehensive Update…

As of February 2025, Radiohead continues to captivate audiences with a series of dynamic projects and collaborations, both as a band and through individual member endeavors.

The Smile: A Prolific Side Project

Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, alongside drummer Tom Skinner, have been actively engaged with their side project, The Smile. In 2024, they released two critically acclaimed albums, Wall of Eyes and Cutouts, recorded simultaneously to explore diverse musical landscapes. The recording sessions took place at Greenwood’s home studio in Oxfordshire and the iconic Abbey Road Studios in London. Greenwood emphasized that Cutouts stands as its own record, distinct from Wall of Eyes, and not merely a collection of leftover tracks. The album delves into themes inspired by espionage and the impact of social media on human interaction.

Thom Yorke’s Solo Ventures

Beyond his work with The Smile, Thom Yorke has pursued various solo projects. In April 2024, he composed the score for the Italian film Confidenza, collaborating with the London Contemporary Orchestra and a jazz ensemble that included Tom Skinner. Later that year, Yorke embarked on a solo tour across New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, and Japan, performing a repertoire spanning his extensive career. In February 2025, he released a new single, “Back in the Game,” in collaboration with electronic artist Mark Pritchard. This track had been previously introduced during Yorke’s solo tour and was accompanied by a visual directed by Jonathan Zawada.

Individual Pursuits of Band Members

Bassist Colin Greenwood has been touring with Nick Cave and Warren Ellis since 2022, contributing to Cave’s 2024 album Wild God. In October 2024, he published a book featuring photographs capturing moments from Radiohead’s journey. Drummer Philip Selway released his third solo album, Strange Dance, in February 2023, showcasing his evolution as a solo artist. Jonny Greenwood collaborated with Israeli musician Dudu Tassa on the album Jarak Qaribak, released in June 2023, blending diverse musical influences.

Prospects of a Radiohead Reunion

The possibility of a Radiohead reunion has been a topic of speculation among fans and media. In September 2024, Colin Greenwood mentioned that the band had rehearsed “to play the old songs,” sparking discussions about a potential 2025 tour. However, Jonny Greenwood indicated that the band plans to focus on individual projects in 2025. Thom Yorke emphasized the band’s autonomy, stating they feel entitled to pursue what resonates with them without adhering to external expectations.

In summary, while Radiohead as a collective remains on a hiatus, its members are actively exploring various creative avenues, both collaboratively and individually. Fans can look forward to diverse musical experiences stemming from these projects, even as the future of a full band reunion remains uncertain.
