Netflix Announce The Jesus and Mary Chain Documentary Date.

Fans of alternative rock and shoegaze are in for a treat as Netflix has officially announced the release date for its upcoming documentary on The Jesus and Mary Chain. Titled Psychocandy: The Story of The Jesus and Mary Chain, the film is set to premiere on July 18, 2025, and will provide an in-depth exploration of the band’s turbulent history, groundbreaking sound, and lasting influence on music.

The documentary, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sophie Muller, will take viewers on a journey through the band’s formation in East Kilbride, Scotland, in the early 1980s. It will chronicle the rise of brothers Jim and William Reid, whose raw, feedback-driven sound and rebellious attitude helped shape the alternative rock landscape. From their chaotic early gigs—often resulting in riots—to their struggles with record labels and internal tensions, Psychocandy: The Story of The Jesus and Mary Chain aims to deliver an unfiltered look at the highs and lows of the band’s career.

Netflix has confirmed that the documentary will feature never-before-seen archival footage, candid interviews with Jim and William Reid, and insights from former band members, music journalists, and fellow musicians. Contributors include Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream), Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), and Shirley Manson (Garbage), who have all cited The Jesus and Mary Chain as a major influence on their music.

Speaking about the documentary, Jim Reid said, “Our story is messy, loud, and chaotic—just like our music. We’re glad it’s finally being told in full, warts and all.” His brother William added, “We never set out to change music, but looking back, I can see how much of an impact we had. Hopefully, this film captures that.”

The documentary will also explore the band’s iconic albums, particularly their 1985 debut Psychocandy, which redefined noise pop and paved the way for the shoegaze movement. The film will delve into their later work, their break-up in 1999, and their unexpected reunion in the 2000s, culminating in their continued success on stage today.

To coincide with the documentary’s release, Warner Music will be issuing a special anniversary edition of Psychocandy featuring remastered tracks, unreleased demos, and live recordings from their earliest shows.

With its mix of nostalgia, raw storytelling, and deep musical insights, Psychocandy: The Story of The Jesus and Mary Chain promises to be a must-watch for both longtime fans and newcomers eager to discover the legacy of one of rock’s most influential bands.
