Shane Duffy received a fine and a driving penalty for his drunk driving incident.

Shane Duffy has been fined and received a three-year driving ban after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred on May 6, shortly before his club Norwich City’s Championship play-off match against Leeds United. The Republic of Ireland defender was also fined €32,000 for his actions.

Duffy was arrested following a collision involving two vehicles on Queens Road, located in a village near Norwich. When tested at the scene, the 32-year-old was found to have a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit.

Shane Duffy learned his fate in court on Tuesday when he appeared before Norwich Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to drink driving. As a result of his conviction, Duffy was handed a mandatory minimum three-year driving ban, as this was not his first offense—he had previously been convicted of drunk driving nine years ago while on loan at Celtic.

Despite the legal issues, Duffy recently featured in Ireland’s national team, playing in their most recent international match where he was substituted at halftime during a 2-1 victory over Hungary. Interim manager John O’Shea stood by his decision to include Duffy in the squad, emphasizing Duffy’s commitment and passion to represent Ireland.

O’Shea commented, “He was very clear about his desire to play for Ireland and to be involved. While his situation is not ideal, we also need to support people. Shane has been an important player for Ireland and he will continue to have our support. People make mistakes, but they also have the opportunity to learn from them and make amends.”
