According to the latest reports, Derby County is set to receive a substantial sum this summer following Liam Delap’s anticipated transfer from Manchester City to Ipswich Town.
As per transfer expert David Ornstein of The Athletic, Ipswich Town, recently promoted to a higher league, has agreed to a £20 million deal with Manchester City for Delap. The initial payment will be £15 million, supplemented by an additional £5 million contingent on specific performance milestones achieved by the center-forward.
Additionally, David Ornstein’s report highlighted that Southampton had also negotiated a comparable agreement with Manchester City and expressed interest in signing Liam Delap. However, the young striker has opted to join Portman Road ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Delap is expected to undergo his medical today and an official announcement from Ipswich Town regarding his signing is anticipated in the near future.
During the entire last season, Liam Delap was on loan at Hull City, where he scored eight goals and provided two assists in 32 matches across all competitions. While he didn’t dominate at the MKM Stadium, his potential caught the attention of top-flight clubs, leading to Ipswich Town agreeing on a £20 million transfer fee.
Despite Ipswich benefiting from Delap’s move, Derby County will also profit from the transfer. According to the Derby Telegraph, the Rams included a sell-on clause in Delap’s contract when he left the club in 2019 to join Manchester City. However, the exact amount Derby County stands to receive this summer has not been disclosed by the outlet.
This marks the second significant financial gain for Derby County in this transfer window, following Omari Kellyman’s recent transfer to Chelsea for £19 million. Kellyman originally moved from Derby to Aston Villa in 2022 for a modest fee of £600,000. However, the Derby Telegraph reports that Derby had included a sell-on clause ranging between 10-15% in Kellyman’s contract.
As a result of this sell-on clause, Derby County stands to receive approximately £1.9-2.85 million from Kellyman’s transfer to Stamford Bridge.
The significance of sell-on clauses for lower league clubs has once again become evident. Recently, Maidenhead United announced that they are set to receive one of the largest transfer payments ever for a club outside the English Football League (EFL) following Max Kilman’s £40 million transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers to West Ham United.
While the exact amount Derby County will gain from Liam Delap’s move to Ipswich Town remains unclear, combined with the funds from Omari Kellyman’s transfer, the club is expected to have several million pounds additional to allocate this summer. These financial gains are a result of strategic decisions made several years ago, highlighting the enduring impact of forward-thinking contract negotiations in football.
