Klay Thompson has made a notable move from the Warriors to the Mavericks, where he joins forces with Luka Doncic. In his introductory press conference, the veteran NBA player and five-time All-Star shared that upon signing with Dallas, he received a message from Doncic expressing excitement.
“[Doncic] texted me saying how excited he is, and I relayed the same message back. I think there’s definitely a mutual respect there,” Thompson told reporters on Tuesday. “I remember seeing him at the end of the 2022 West finals and telling him how much I admired his game and how he elevates his teammates. His potential is limitless.”
“I think that resonated with him, and he was gracious in defeat. I appreciate someone who embraces the moment and competes to the end, and Luka fits that description,” Thompson added. “I believe we’ll bring out the best in each other.”
Klay Thompson spoke highly of Luka Doncic, expressing admiration for the Slovenian superstar’s abilities both in the NBA and earlier in EuroLeague.
“Luka, even before he entered the NBA, watching his EuroLeague highlights, you’d see this 18-year-old doing incredible things against grown men, and you’d think, ‘This is crazy’,” Klay remarked. “The impact he made as a rookie showed he had greatness.”
With the combined skills and basketball IQ of Luka, Klay, and Kyrie Irving, Thompson believes the Mavericks could have a winning formula for a championship.
“I watched the Mavs in the 2023-24 NBA Finals and saw, ‘I can really help this team’,” Klay noted. “They’re right there… Dirk went through it in his first Finals and Luka did too. We’re knocking on the door, and that’s what really excited me about coming here.”
