JUST IN: Mavericks rookie could join rotation sooner than…

After the Dallas Mavericks lost their first Summer League game against the Utah Jazz, 90-89, they aim to bounce back in their next matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies tonight.

Brandon Williams, a newly signed guard, led the team in their opening game, showcasing his impressive ball handling and athleticism with a strong performance, scoring 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting. He was the only player who truly stood out as a primary shot creator.

Despite the loss, there were encouraging signs from some of Dallas’ role players, particularly Melvin Ajinca, the Mavericks’ recent No. 51 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Ajinca contributed 13 points in 24 minutes, shooting 5-of-13. The 6-foot-8 wing demonstrated his ability to attack closeouts and finish around the rim, while also playing solid defense and holding his ground against stronger opponents.

Although Ajinca struggled with his three-point shooting, going 1-of-5, his shooting form looked promising, suggesting he could develop into an efficient shooter with time and practice.

Mavericks fans should feel optimistic about Ajinca’s performance in his Summer League debut, especially considering that Mavericks’ President of Basketball Operations, Nico Harrison, hinted at the possibility of Ajinca being drafted and stashed.

While it’s early to draw conclusions from just one game, Ajinca shows potential to become a versatile wing for Dallas. He could turn out to be a valuable find from his draft class if he continues to develop his frame and shooting skills.

Ajinca needs to keep proving himself in the remaining Summer League games and during training camp to secure a spot in the main rotation, but the Mavericks should closely monitor his progress, as he could contribute sooner than anticipated.
