Newsnow: Signing of “Insurance” by the Maple Leafs Could Have “Significant Impact”

The Toronto Maple Leafs made six signings from outside the organization during the beginning of free agency, but Philippe Myers didn’t receive much attention compared to the high-profile addition of Chris Tanev from the Dallas Stars. Despite this, Myers has the potential to be a hidden gem for the team.

Jim Parsons from NHL Trade Talk penned an article on July 16 commending the Leafs for their acquisition of Myers on July 1.

“When Philippe Myers joined the Toronto Maple Leafs shortly after July 1, it was initially seen as a move to bolster defensive depth and provide insurance. However, Jim Parsons speculated whether Myers might offer more than expected. Could he potentially make a noteworthy impact on the team’s lineup?”

During the 2023-24 season, the defenseman played only five games with the Lightning and spent additional time in the American Hockey League. Myers recorded 4 goals and 19 assists, totaling 23 points in 61 games with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL.

Parsons suggests that Myers possesses several qualities that could make him an exceptional acquisition for the Maple Leafs. Specifically, Parsons emphasized Myers’ “substantial size and physical presence.”

Parsons elaborated, stating, “Myers’ capacity to effectively utilize his size could aid in neutralizing opposing forwards and bolstering the team’s defensive foundation. His ability to leverage his size advantageously in battles along the boards and in front of the net has the potential to significantly impact the Maple Leafs’ defensive lineup. His formidable stature and proficiency in winning puck battles would provide considerable advantages to the team.”

At 6-foot-6 and weighing 213 pounds, Myers’ imposing stature is a key asset that addresses Toronto’s needs for the 2024 offseason.

According to David Pagnotta from The Fourth Period, in a report dated June 19, the Leafs were specifically targeting “big bodies on defense” leading up to free agency. This strategy was consistent with the signings of Tanev and Myers.

Pagnotta stated, “The Toronto Maple Leafs are aiming to increase the size of their defensive corps this offseason, as GM Brad Treliving is reportedly looking to acquire one or two big defensemen.” He added, “Treliving is said to be considering all possibilities, both through free agency and the trade market.”
