Head coach JJ Redick has identified the need for a physical center to complement Anthony Davis, who prefers playing as a power forward rather than a center.
One player the Lakers are considering is Robert Williams from the Portland Trail Blazers. Williams, known for his defensive prowess, has struggled with injuries throughout his career but remains a desirable option when healthy.
According to NBA executives, Williams is available for the right offer, although the Blazers are seeking substantial returns for their players. Williams, under contract for another two seasons at $48 million, presents both potential and risk due to his injury history.
Despite Williams’ limited offensive capabilities, he excels as a passer and finisher around the rim, shooting an impressive 72.9% from the field in his career. His defensive abilities were highlighted by a strong finish in Defensive Player of the Year voting in 2022.
For the Lakers, acquiring Williams would likely involve parting ways with guards such as Gabe Vincent and Jalen Hood-Schifino to match salary requirements. However, the Blazers’ insistence on receiving significant assets, possibly including first-round picks, complicates potential trade negotiations.
Nevertheless, if the Blazers value Hood-Schifino similarly to a first-round pick, a deal could benefit both sides, offering the Lakers a defensive anchor in Williams, provided he can stay healthy and contribute consistently.
