West Coast defender Tom Barrass is evaluating his future amidst strong interest from the Western Bulldogs. The Eagles are undergoing a rebuilding phase and are in search of a new coach following the departure of their 2018 premiership coach, Adam Simpson.
Despite being under contract with West Coast until 2027, Barrass, who played a crucial role in the club’s recent success, is reportedly contemplating a substantial offer from the Bulldogs. West Coast has the option to retain the 29-year-old under his current contract and decline any trade proposals. However, they could also potentially leverage Barrass’s market value to acquire higher draft picks or a seasoned player who aligns better with their current team strategy and age profile.
“Tom Morris from Channel 9’s SEN has revealed that Tom Barrass is actively considering his options regarding his future,” Morris said. “The recent departure of Adam Simpson might sway his decision towards staying with West Coast.”
“He still has three years left on his current contract, so West Coast can hold onto him if they choose,” Morris continued. “However, it’s understood that the Western Bulldogs are prepared to extend his contract by at least two additional seasons, making it a five-year deal. This potential offer poses a decision for Barrass, who is approaching 29 years old.”
“The situation also raises questions about how this might impact Rory Lobb’s future,” Morris added. “Ultimately, it depends on Barrass’ preference and whether West Coast can facilitate any potential move.”
Morris’ report coincides with a decrease in interest from the Western Bulldogs for All-Australian ruckman Tim English, with the club’s focus shifting to bringing home a tall player to Western Australia. West Coast remains actively involved, having presented a significant offer to entice Barrass away from the Bulldogs.
“Tim English is another player in the spotlight,” Morris added. “Sources suggest that West Coast’s offer spans six years, although it’s reportedly not as financially attractive as it was initially perceived.”
“The Western Bulldogs, on the other hand, have tabled a five-year deal,” Morris continued. “Considering coach Luke Beveridge’s stance on ruckmen, it’s unlikely the Bulldogs will significantly alter their offer.”
“It appears increasingly likely that English could opt to depart rather than remain,” Morris concluded.
“In other news concerning West Coast, there are indications that co-captain Liam Duggan is set to extend his tenure with the club, with negotiations pointing toward a four-year agreement.”
