Ben Brereton Diaz, whom Southampton is aiming to sign, is arriving in England this afternoon for his medical with the club, according to sources speaking to Football Insider.
Discussions will proceed between the Chilean player and the Premier League team regarding what appears to be a loan agreement for the Villarreal striker.
Football Insider reported yesterday that the clubs have reached an agreement on the deal, and now they are working on finalizing the remaining details.
Last season, the 25-year-old forward spent the latter half on loan at Sheffield United, who unfortunately were relegated from the Premier League.
Following Southampton’s promotion after winning the playoff final last season, Diaz will make his return to the top tier of English football with the Saints.
During his time at Villarreal, Diaz did not manage to score any goals or provide assists in his 20 appearances, and he is now seeking a fresh start and new challenges.
Southampton intends to replace Che Adams with Ben Brereton Diaz. Adams left St Mary’s after his contract expired, prompting Southampton to prioritize signing a new striker this window. With the Scotland international now at Torino, there is a vacancy to fill in the Saints’ squad.
During his time with the club, Che Adams made 191 appearances for Southampton, scoring 48 goals and contributing 20 assists.
