Chicago Bears sign cornerback from Auburn and former Bessemer City

The day following Chicago’s 21-17 win over the Houston Texans in the NFL’s 2024 preseason opener on Thursday night, the Bears bolstered their secondary. Cornerback Ro Torrence was signed on Friday and will join the team when they return to practice on Saturday.

Torrence, a Bessemer City and Auburn alumnus, initially signed with the Seattle Seahawks as a rookie free agent from Arizona State on May 3. However, he was released by the Seahawks on June 25.

Ro Torrence had a standout high school career at Bessemer City High School, where he intercepted four passes and caught five touchdown passes in 2018, helping the team achieve their most recent playoff victory in the AHSAA.

After high school, Torrence played two seasons with the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons, earning NJCAA Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2020 as part of their national championship team.

In 2021, Torrence returned to his home state to play at Auburn. Although he only recorded one tackle in the regular season, he made a significant impact in the Tigers’ 17-13 Birmingham Bowl loss to Houston, where he recorded four tackles, broke up a pass, and forced a fumble.

Torrence transferred to Arizona State in the spring of 2022, where he played for the Sun Devils for the next two seasons.
