Despite strong interest from the west, the Western Bulldogs seem set to hold onto All-Australian ruckman Tim English, as the team is making “really positive” progress toward a re-signing.
Being one of just two restricted free agents unsigned past this year, English has been in great demand since he inked his first All-Australian blazer in 2023.
The 26-year-old is a native of West Australia, and the Eagles are showing a lot of interest in him as they try to rebuild into the dominant team they once were.
Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge, nevertheless, is certain that English will stay at the Kennel, stating that no pressure would be put on him to make a decision quickly.
“Not really, no (timeline on when English will make his decision),” Beveridge replied.
“I don’t believe that has ever actually happened. We have never asked to be informed of the potential outcome.
“In my opinion, both practically and philosophically, it sometimes can’t happen till the end of the year. And we are grateful for it.
“I believe that, particularly recently, the talks with Tim and his management have been incredibly beneficial.
“Whether a decision is imminent I’m not sure, but there’s definitely no pressure on him to make a call right now.”
In a playful aside, the 2016 Premiership coach said he would step away from “those conversations” and let list manager Sam Power handle the situation.
“I avoid it,” Beveridge continued.
“On that, I keep in my lane. I delegate list management and those talks to Sam (Power), and I’ll act as the coach when necessary.”
English’s chances of staying would be growing as the Bulldogs storm into premiership contention, having won six of their last seven games—their lone loss coming against Port Adelaide.
There is a sense of unresolved business as they look to make amends for their 2021 grand final defeat, while the unwavering Dogs have been compared to their 2016 selves after ending a 62-year drought and making history.
Despite their amazing run of play, they won’t be guaranteed a spot in the finals, as their 2024 home and away schedule includes matches against North Melbourne, Adelaide, and GWS.
