Toronto Maple Leafs Set to Finalize Contract with Jake McCabe
As the Toronto Maple Leafs navigate the start of the NHL season with a balanced 1-1 record, the team is actively working to fortify its roster for the future. With several pivotal players approaching free agency in 2025, the Maple Leafs’ management is focused on securing extensions for key athletes, including veteran defenseman Jake McCabe, who joined the team last season. His contract status has become a priority for the organization, and recent discussions suggest a resolution may be on the horizon.
Reports indicate that negotiations with McCabe have intensified, particularly following his confirmation of ongoing talks in September. Although a deal has yet to be finalized, insiders believe that an announcement could be imminent. Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period noted that the talks are “close” to fruition, with progress being made in negotiations involving multiple players ahead of the season’s start. Pagnotta emphasized that the discussions surrounding McCabe are among the most advanced.
In a recent conversation, Pagnotta mentioned that the negotiations appear to be on track, hinting that a contract agreement could be reached soon. “It certainly sounds like there have been constructive discussions, and we may see more movement in the coming days,” he stated, highlighting the positive nature of the talks.
Jake McCabe, who is in the final year of a four-year, $67million deal, has proven to be an essential component of the Leafs’ defense since his acquisition from the Chicago Blackhawks in February. At 30 years old, he has expressed a strong desire to continue with the team, stating during the training camp, “I love it here, and I think they appreciate my contributions as well. We’ve had a few discussions, and I’m optimistic about where things might head.”
In the past season, McCabe showcased his skills by participating in 73 games, scoring 8 goals, and providing 20 assists, totaling 28 points. He also contributed during the playoffs, adding 1 point in 7 games. As the team looks to the future, securing McCabe’s talents could play a significant role in their long-term success.
