Rising NRL Star Faces Court Over Driving Charge

Sydney Roosters halfback Sandon Smith has been charged with negligent driving and is expected to face significant scrutiny from the NRL following a court appearance related to the incident. The case is set to be addressed in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on Friday, where Smith will respond to a charge of negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm. This situation arises from an event that occurred in March, which could result in a maximum penalty of nine months in prison or a fine of $2,200.

The incident in question involved a three-car collision in Vaucluse. According to police reports, Smith allegedly failed to yield when exiting a driveway, leading to a collision with another vehicle. As a result of the crash, a pedestrian sustained serious foot injuries and required medical attention. Emergency services were called to the scene on the morning of March 13, 2024, where they found three vehicles, including an Audi, Toyota SUV, and Mazda SUV, had been involved in the accident.

Police indicated that the injured pedestrian, a 38-year-old man, was treated on-site before being transported to St Vincent’s Hospital. Following the investigation, Smith received a notice to appear in court for his alleged role in the accident, where he faces serious charges.

The timing of Smith’s charges could further complicate matters, as he was notified just days before a critical match against Penrith. Although the NRL’s integrity unit only learned of the situation on the eve of his court appearance, the Roosters are aware of the circumstances, though they have not disclosed when they were informed.

Despite the seriousness of the charges, Smith’s case does not trigger the NRL’s automatic no-fault stand-down policy. As the Roosters prepare for next season, Smith is anticipated to play a pivotal role in leading the team’s offensive strategy, especially following the retirements and injuries of key players like Luke Keary and Sam Walker. With expectations high for his performance, the outcome of this court case could have significant implications for both his career and the team’s future.
