Texas Defense Adjusts for Vernon Broughton’s Suspension Against Florida
The Texas Longhorns will face a significant challenge in their upcoming game against Florida, as defensive tackle Vernon Broughton is set to miss the first half due to a targeting penalty in the game against Vanderbilt. While penalties are always a source of frustration for coaches, Head Coach Steve Sarkisian remains focused on making adjustments to ensure his defense performs at a high level. Though the loss of Broughton for the first half is a setback, Sarkisian remains confident that the rest of the defensive line will step up in his absence.
With Broughton sidelined, the Longhorns’ defensive coaches have been planning for how to distribute practice repetitions to get the most out of their other defensive tackles. Coach Sarkisian has been especially encouraged by the recent performance of several players who have shown improvement throughout the season. “Jermayne Lole has really emerged in the last month,” Sarkisian said. “Bill Norton, Alex January, and Tiaoalii Savea have all shown growth, and we’ll need even more from them as we head into this game.” Additionally, he highlighted Sydir Mitchell’s recent strong play as a crucial factor in bolstering the defensive front.
Lole, who transferred from Arizona State after playing three seasons there, has been an impactful addition to the defensive line. With 123 tackles, including 20 tackles for loss and 11 sacks during his time with the Sun Devils, Lole brings a wealth of experience to the table. Bill Norton, who played for Georgia and Arizona before transferring to Texas, is another veteran presence on the line. Last season, Norton registered 32 tackles, two forced fumbles, and five quarterback pressures, proving he has the ability to make significant contributions in the trenches.
Even with these veteran players ready to step in, Texas will continue to rely on Alfred Collins, now in his fifth season. Collins has been a staple of the defensive line, having appeared in 56 games with 20 starts, and his leadership will be key in keeping the defensive front solid during Broughton’s absence. The Longhorns are also generating strong pressure off the edge with players like Barryn Sorrell, Colin Simmons, and Ethan Burke, who have shown they can disrupt opposing offenses. However, the defensive tackles will need to focus on holding their ground in the middle to prevent Florida’s powerful running game from taking control.
Coach Sarkisian emphasized the importance of stopping the run, knowing that Florida is a team built around a strong ground game. “Florida believes in running the football, so we have to be ready to stop the run,” Sarkisian noted. “We’ll need all of our defensive linemen to rise to the occasion and fill the gap until Vernon returns in the second half.” With Broughton’s return expected after halftime, Texas will look to regain its full strength and continue the defensive pressure against a tough Florida offense.
As the Longhorns prepare for this crucial matchup, all eyes will be on the defensive line to see how they manage without one of their star players for part of the game. With a combination of seasoned veterans and emerging talents, Texas is hopeful that they can maintain their defensive dominance and take control of the game.
