AFL 2024: “Excellent” Luke Beveridge, the coach of the Western Bulldogs, commended Rory Lobb for his defensive skills.

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has asserted that Rory Lobb’s place in the team should no longer be in doubt following his stellar defensive performance that contributed to a decisive win over Geelong.

Beveridge described the victory as a “pretty special night” and praised Lobb for “raising the bar” with his defensive play. In just his fourth game as a defender, the 31-year-old delivered a career-high 21 disposals and took nine marks, effectively limiting Jeremy Cameron to just one goal at GMHBA Stadium.

“Lobb looks like a natural defender … It’s been challenging when he hasn’t been in the team because he’s such a talented player, a dedicated professional, and a great person,” Beveridge said. “While those qualities don’t always influence selection, I’m thrilled that his current form makes his spot in the team – provided he’s fit – indisputable.”

“We’ve found a way to move forward with him, and I’m thrilled that he’s found peace not only in his football and professional life but in general,” Beveridge said.

He also commended Buku Khamis, Taylor Duryea, and rookie Nick Coffield for their impressive performances in the backline, which is still missing Liam Jones due to a knee injury.

“Lobb and Buku were virtually impenetrable. It was a standout performance from our key backs. Rory was truly magnificent,” Beveridge noted. “Rory has elevated his game, and that’s very encouraging.”

He highlighted that while there were several standout performances, every player contributed significantly to the win, which he finds particularly motivating. “It’s great to see everyone making a major contribution and driving back from the game feeling they played a crucial role in what was a special night.”

“We adjusted their roles a bit more than usual due to the conditions and the pressure we were aiming for,” Beveridge explained. “I believe they will be even better next week. Jamarra’s effort and eagerness to tackle are evident, which is very beneficial for us. It was also great to see him find the scoreboard in the last quarter.”
