NHL analyst Tyler Ball from The Hockey Patrol has suggested that the Toronto Maple Leafs should strongly consider adding Ryan Johansen to their roster. Originally set to enter the final year of his eight-year, $64 million contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, Johansen’s contract was unexpectedly terminated due to a material breach. This development has made the experienced centerman a free agent, and Ball sees this as an opportunity for the Maple Leafs.
Ball argues that if the Maple Leafs can bring Johansen on board through a player tryout or a low-cost contract, it could be a valuable move. At his best, Johansen has proven himself as a solid second-line player, once tallying 50 to 60 points per season with the Nashville Predators. However, his recent performance has been hampered by injuries over the past two seasons, impacting his overall productivity. Despite these setbacks, Ball believes Johansen remains one of the more talented free agents available and could be a smart pick-up for the Maple Leafs, especially if they are looking to strengthen their third-line center position.
Adding to the intrigue, Johansen and his agent, Kurt Overhardt, have announced plans to file a grievance against the Flyers for terminating his contract. Overhardt emphasized that Johansen’s injury, which requires significant surgery, was well-known to the team, and they had been working closely with the Flyers’ medical staff. The dispute centers on the timing and circumstances of his release, with Johansen determined to defend his rights through the NHL Players’ Association.
Johansen’s track record in the NHL is notable, having played 905 games and recording 578 points through 202 goals and 376 assists. While his recent injury raises questions about his immediate future, his experience and skill set make him a potential asset for any team, particularly a contender like the Maple Leafs.
As the Maple Leafs gear up for the 2024-25 season, set to begin on October 9 against the Montreal Canadiens, their general manager, Brad Treliving, has indicated that the team is still exploring options to improve their roster. With around $1.2 million in cap space remaining, Treliving has hinted that further moves are possible, and Johansen could be a part of those considerations. The coming weeks will be crucial as teams finalize their rosters, and the Maple Leafs may see Johansen as a low-risk, high-reward addition.
