Former NHL player and current analyst, Frankie Corrado, recently shared his thoughts on how the Toronto Maple Leafs could benefit from re-signing veteran forward James van Riemsdyk. Corrado believes the 35-year-old, who last played for the Maple Leafs in 2018, could provide much-needed depth at left-wing for the team. Having spent the previous season with the Boston Bruins, van Riemsdyk recorded 38 points, including 11 goals and 27 assists in 71 games. Despite not being the top-line player he once was, his experience and familiarity with the Maple Leafs could prove invaluable.
Corrado pointed out that van Riemsdyk’s potential role would be in the lower lines, contributing particularly to the second power-play unit. This strategic placement, according to Corrado, could help Toronto with scoring challenges, particularly during playoff stretches where goals tend to be harder to come by. He emphasized the value of having a reliable veteran who could provide crucial scoring at unexpected moments, which could make a significant difference over a seven-game series. Moreover, his previous time in Toronto as a fan-favorite adds to the appeal of bringing him back.
Throughout his NHL career, van Riemsdyk has proven to be a consistent performer. With over 1000 games played and more than 600 points to his name, his experience and leadership are qualities that could help solidify the Maple Leafs’ lineup. Selected second overall in the 2007 NHL Draft, van Riemsdyk has been a presence in the league since 2009, giving him an extensive understanding of the game and what it takes to succeed in high-pressure situations.
Toronto’s need for additional left-wing talent is apparent, particularly with Nick Robertson’s situation still unresolved as he remains a restricted free agent and has requested a trade. Alongside van Riemsdyk, another name being linked to the Maple Leafs is Max Pacioretty. According to NHL insider Chris Johnston, Toronto has expressed interest in signing Pacioretty, though he is considering other options as well. With Toronto’s limited cap space, the team will need to make calculated decisions to improve their left-wing depth.
