“Badly needs upgrading” Sheffield United Fans Chuckle as Pundit Rips into Hillsborough Stadium.

Adrian Durham Criticizes Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough Stadium as the Worst in the Championship

TalkSPORT presenter Adrian Durham has recently labeled Hillsborough, the historic home of Sheffield Wednesday, as the worst ground in the Championship. The broadcaster, who completed the notable achievement of visiting all the stadiums of clubs currently in the English Football League and Premier League, placed Hillsborough at the bottom of his rankings.

Hillsborough is a stadium forever linked with some of the most significant moments in English football history. Tragically, the ground is associated with the 1989 disaster, when 97 Liverpool fans lost their lives during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. Despite this tragic event, Hillsborough has witnessed its share of positive footballing moments, particularly for Sheffield Wednesday, including two remarkable comebacks that have secured promotion and survival in recent seasons.

However, Durham has highlighted the need for upgrades at the stadium, noting that parts of it feel “very dated” and in need of significant improvements. He ranked Hillsborough last in the Championship, a decision influenced by his personal experience as a Peterborough United supporter. Durham referenced Peterborough’s dramatic collapse during the 2023 League One play-off semi-final, where Wednesday overturned a four-goal deficit to secure promotion to the Championship.

Despite admitting the bias behind his low ranking, Durham stood by his opinion that the stadium requires modernization. In contrast, Bramall Lane, the home of Sheffield Wednesday’s local rivals Sheffield United, was ranked ninth, and Elland Road, home to Leeds United, secured second place in Durham’s overall list of best stadiums.

While Durham’s decision has sparked debate, with some arguing that Hillsborough, despite its age, still holds more character than several other Championship grounds, his ranking underlines the growing concerns over the need to upgrade one of English football’s most iconic stadiums.
