By now, even if you’ve only been casually following the Chicago Bears’ 2024 offseason, you’ve probably noticed that the arrival of former USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams has generated considerable excitement in the Windy City. Williams brings with him an impressive collegiate record and a skill set that has NFL executives buzzing, thanks to his blend of abilities reminiscent of both Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers.
The Bears, who picked Caleb Williams with the 1st overall pick in April’s NFL Draft, clearly conducted thorough research throughout the extensive pre-Draft process. From top to bottom within the organization, they were well aware of what they were getting with the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner. Even a few weeks into training camp, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus remains amazed by Williams’ ability to make plays with the ball, particularly his impressive throws while on the move.
“It’s pretty exceptional. He’s pretty accurate there,” Eberflus remarked, according to a tweet from Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic. “It’s pretty amazing.”
Caleb Williams entered the NFL with a reputation as a masterful pocket passer from his time at USC, known for his composure under pressure and ability to make big throws downfield. However, it’s his Mahomes-like and Rodgers-esque ability to improvise and make throws while moving that significantly enhances his potential. Seriously, how many players can pull off a throw like this?
We’re talking about a pinpoint throw made under pressure, while on the run, and across his body. If Caleb Williams is a skilled surgeon in the pocket, then he’s an ER physician when he’s on the move, showcasing his brilliance in the most chaotic situations.
