Brad Marchand to terminate his eight year, $49 million contract with Bruins

Boston Bruins veteran Brad Marchand is entering the last season of his eight-year, $49 million contract, and while fans may be curious about potential contract negotiations, Marchand has made it clear that he won’t be discussing it publicly. At a media session on September 3 during the Bruins captain’s practice, Marchand addressed the topic head-on, emphasizing his desire to keep the conversation behind closed doors. “I’ll say this once and leave it at that — I won’t talk about contract matters in the media,” he stated. He further added that whatever happens will be handled privately between him, General Manager Don Sweeney, and their group.

Despite his firm stance on keeping negotiations out of the public eye, there’s a strong sense of mutual respect between Marchand and the Bruins organization. Both sides have expressed interest in ensuring that Marchand, a key figure in the team for years, remains with the Bruins for the rest of his career. GM Don Sweeney has even stated that the goal is for Marchand to retire in a Bruins jersey. For Marchand, Boston has always been home, and he has no intention of leaving, provided his body holds up and he can continue playing at a high level. At 36, he’s determined to continue playing until he’s at least 40, showing no signs of slowing down.

“If my body holds up and I can still compete, then yes, I want to keep playing,” Marchand explained, underscoring his passion for the game. “We’re lucky to play this sport, living out the dreams of many kids. Every day, I get to live my dream.”

Marchand’s career statistics speak to his impact on the ice. Over 1,029 games, he has tallied an impressive 929 points, with 401 goals and 528 assists. He’s also known for his physical play, racking up 1,051 penalty minutes. In addition, his postseason performance has been equally remarkable, with 138 points in 157 playoff games, including 56 goals and 82 assists. Marchand was a pivotal player during the Bruins’ 2011 Stanley Cup win, further cementing his legacy in Boston.

As Marchand heads into what could be his final season with the Bruins under his current contract, both fans and the organization will be watching closely to see how negotiations unfold, even if the details remain out of the public spotlight.
