After the draft reload, the Mavericks will soon have their hands full against their division rival.

The Dallas Mavericks could face a significant challenge when they meet the Memphis Grizzlies next season. Zach Edey, selected ninth overall in the 2024 NBA Draft by the Grizzlies, adds considerable size and skill to their roster. Meanwhile, another division rival, the San Antonio Spurs, made a notable addition by drafting UConn’s Stephon Castle to complement Victor Wembanyama.

Since defying all odds, starting from being ranked as the 436th best player out of high school, Zach Edey has established himself as one of the most dominant figures in college basketball history at Purdue.

Edey’s imposing presence may pose a significant challenge for the Dallas Mavericks when they face their division rival next season. Unlike comparisons drawn to players like Tacko Fall or Luka Garza, Edey has proven to be far more dominant at the college level. His consistent improvement in draft stock each year underscores why his impact is uniquely formidable.

While the Mavericks were able to exploit Oklahoma City’s defensive vulnerabilities in the playoffs, primarily due to Chet Holmgren being their lone interior defender, the Memphis Grizzlies won’t face the same issue. Holmgren, standing at 7-foot-1 and 208 pounds, has proven to be a reliable post presence and is expected to continue this role for years to come. However, size is an innate advantage that cannot be taught.

In contrast, Zach Edey stands at an imposing 7-foot-4 and weighs 300 pounds. At the NBA Draft Combine, his wingspan measured an impressive 7 feet and 10.75 inches, second only to Wembanyama. Edey’s agility is notable in pick-and-roll situations, where he can effectively cover guards on the perimeter despite his size. Whether disrupting a lob pass or defending against a dribble drive, Edey’s ability to cover ground and make plays on the ball is remarkable for someone of his stature.

While Luka Doncic exposed Rudy Gobert and the Timberwolves’ defensive strategy by taking advantage of their drop coverage, Edey offers a different defensive presence due to his expansive reach and size. His physical attributes set him apart from players like Gobert and Holmgren.

Edey’s ability to defend both guards and big men, whether they drive to the basket or operate on the perimeter, highlights his versatility. Given Doncic’s comparative lack of speed against some opponents, Edey’s defensive capabilities allow him more time to react during plays.

While the Mavericks enjoyed success with lob passes this season, they may need to adjust their offensive tactics against Memphis. Certain pick-and-roll situations might not be as straightforward when facing Edey and the Grizzlies in the upcoming season.

Dallas big man Dereck Lively II and Edey previously faced off against each other in the Phil Knight Legacy Championship in 2022, where Purdue emerged victorious over Duke. Lively II prioritized strong defensive contributions, tallying five rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Meanwhile, Edey showcased his offensive prowess in the paint, posing a significant challenge for Lively II and ultimately scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
