Exclusive: A blow to Bournemouth’s hopes for the next Premier League season is Tyler Adams’ injury.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has disclosed that midfielder Tyler Adams will be sidelined at the beginning of the season due to a back injury. Adams, who joined Bournemouth last summer for £20 million after a season with Leeds following their relegation to the Championship, had a challenging first year with the South Coast club, making only four appearances due to injuries.

Despite his setbacks, Adams was included in the USA squad for the 2024 Copa America, starting in all three group matches. However, Iraola revealed that Adams exacerbated his back issue during the tournament and subsequently underwent surgery two days after the USA’s elimination from the competition.

“He finished the season with a back injury,” Iraola told reporters. “He wanted to play in the Copa America, which was very important to him, but he was still in pain and had restrictions. After they were knocked out, he had surgery. He won’t be fit for the start of the season. It’s hard to say how long exactly, but maybe September? October? I’m not sure.”

Regarding Adams’ Copa America participation, Iraola clarified that Bournemouth had no say in the matter as it was up to national teams to select players. Despite Adams’ hopes that playing might alleviate his injury, it unfortunately worsened.

As a result of his surgery, Adams will miss all four of Bournemouth’s pre-season friendlies and is expected to sit out the Premier League matches scheduled for August. Whether he will recover in time to play in any of Bournemouth’s games in September and October remains uncertain.
