Exclusive: Despite offering a 34-year-old new contract, Southampton plans to raid the seasoned Brighton player.

Southampton are preparing to make a bid for Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele as manager Russell Martin aims to secure a new first-choice goalkeeper ahead of their return to the Premier League, TEAMtalk can exclusively reveal.

Experienced goalkeeper Alex McCarthy took over for Southampton during the latter stages of last season, stepping in after primary keeper Gavin Bazunu suffered a season-ending injury in April. The Republic of Ireland international Bazunu is anticipated to be out until 2025 due to an Achilles rupture, prompting Martin to prioritize bolstering his goalkeeping squad.

According to sources confirmed to TEAMtalk on June 25, Alex McCarthy was set to extend his contract with Southampton, a deal that was officially announced three days later.

However, despite McCarthy’s strong performances and his new contract, Southampton still face a goalkeeping shortage due to Gavin Bazunu’s long-term injury. Jason Steele is seen as a perfect fit for manager Russell Martin’s requirements, as he is comfortable playing with the ball at his feet and has demonstrated this ability with Brighton.

Steele shared the goalkeeper position with Bart Verbruggen at Brighton last season, making 17 Premier League starts and appearing in 23 matches overall. It’s understood that Steele could be enticed by the opportunity to move to Southampton and secure the position of first-choice goalkeeper.

Southampton are optimistic that Bart Verbruggen overtaking Jason Steele in Brighton’s hierarchy will persuade Steele to entertain their interest and contemplate a transfer to St Mary’s.
