Stanley spent 12 years with the Seagulls, five of those as a set play coach, but is now linking up with Johannes Hoff Thorup in the Dane’s backroom team.
Thorup hinted after Saturday’s Standard Liege friendly the Canaries were close to appointing a replacement for Hughes, who left to join Premier League new boys Leicester City following the departure of former head coach David Wagner.
The club’s sporting director, Ben Knapper, emphasized during Thorup’s official introduction that once Leicester City and Brentford showed interest in Hughes, they aimed to recruit a specialist in set pieces.
“We’re delighted to have Nick join the club,” Knapper stated, as quoted on Norwich City’s official website. “He brings valuable experience from his time at Brighton & Hove Albion, where he worked alongside top-notch coaches.”
“He will significantly enhance our set-piece strategy as a dedicated specialist in that area, while also contributing to the broader coaching staff in team and individual development.
“We are all enthusiastic about Nick joining our club and starting to collaborate towards achieving our objectives.”
Thorup brought compatriot Glen Riddersholm with him to England but initially inherited Hughes, alongside first-team coach Narcis Pelach and goalkeeper coach Paul Clements.
Stanley’s background lies in analysis, including his role as head of academy performance at Brighton, before specializing in set pieces during Graham Potter’s tenure at the Seagulls.
“He’s a young, ambitious, intelligent, and hard-working individual who is a key member of the team,” commented Potter in a 2022 interview with the Argus. “We continuously strive for improvement in all areas, and having someone dedicated to that role has been beneficial. Nick has shown ambition and quality in his work. It’s about nurturing his development, helping him understand his role and how he can contribute to the team’s success.
“The players have responded positively to him; he’s a positive presence off the pitch and deeply invested in the team’s performance. He’s integral to our setup and our ambitions.”
