Exclusive: Preview of Norwich City vs. Magdeburg’s preseason friendly

The friendly will be Johannes Hoff Thorup’s first match managing from the home dugout at the stadium, and it also marks the Canaries’ first home game since their play-off semi-final against Leeds United in May.

Their German opponents are equally motivated for the encounter, with local media calling it the highlight of their summer and over 400 fans anticipated to make the journey.

The 2. Bundesliga side is gearing up for a strong push this season, aiming to improve on their 14th-place finish from last term. While Norwich City has been patient during a quiet transfer window, FC Mönchengladbach head coach Christian Titz has already strengthened his squad with 10 new signings.

FC Magdeburg’s 10 new signings have cost around £1 million in total, making them significant underdogs going into the game. In contrast, Norwich City has already spent over £3 million on their sole signing this window, with new arrival Jose Cordoba potentially making his debut. Cordoba participated in the club’s open training session on Wednesday after joining the squad following his Copa America campaign with Panama.

Star striker Josh Sargent, who also competed in the tournament with the USA, missed the session despite returning for fitness testing earlier in the week. His workload is being managed due to a recurring ankle issue that has complicated his summer, but there’s optimism that the worst is behind him.

Angus Gunn and Christian Fassnacht were absent from Wednesday’s training, though their issues are considered minor and should not affect their availability for the season opener against Oxford United next month.

Grant Hanley and Kenny McLean are gradually increasing their training loads following their Euro 2024 commitments, along with Liam Gibbs and Onel Hernandez, who are returning from long-term injuries after playing in Belgium.

Ashley Barnes is sidelined with a calf injury and will miss the Championship kick-off, with a typical recovery period of six to eight weeks.
