World Cup Strike Threat: Fijian Rugby Faces Turmoil
“There’s corruption at the heart of Fijian rugby,” captain Waisea Nayacalevu declared in a stunning interview with the Daily Mail, revealing that players were ready to boycott their crucial quarter-final against England over unfulfilled promises of bonuses. “We were prepared to walk out. They promised us rewards, but nothing materialized.”
Nayacalevu shared the dramatic steps he took while in Marseille, organizing a presentation and a Zoom call to confront the rugby union about their broken commitments. “We issued a clear ultimatum: if payment wasn’t made by a certain date, none of us would step onto the field for the quarter-final.”
His bold claims were backed by teammate Levani Botia, who noted that senior players had to rally the team, urging them to focus on the game rather than the ongoing pay disputes. The stakes have never been higher for Fijian rugby as tensions rise ahead of the match!
