Following fresh information, Southampton may now sign a “technically outstanding” target for free.

Russell Martin has wasted no time in bringing his Southampton players back for pre-season this month, aiming to prepare the squad for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

The Southampton manager is aware of the need for new players, as evidenced by the five acquisitions that have been confirmed so far this summer, even though the majority of that work will be done on the Staplewood training field.

Defense has been the top priority thus far, as evidenced by the signings of left-back Charlie Taylor and center-backs Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Nathan Wood, and Ronnie Edwards.

Adam Lallana, a midfielder, has also joined for free after his Brighton contract expired, bringing much-needed experience and skill to the team.

Following Lallana, Southampton has now heard encouraging tidings about the possible comeback of another former player, whose club is expected to release him for free.

Southampton has been linked with Danny Ings, who previously spent three seasons at St Mary’s before transferring to Aston Villa for £25 million in 2021—a move that disappointed Saints fans.

While Danny Ings’ potential return to Southampton may not be enthusiastically embraced by all fans, the comeback of another former player could be more warmly received.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made a name for himself by helping Southampton achieve promotion to League One at just 16 years old, before moving to Arsenal for an initial fee of £12 million in the summer of 2011. After several seasons in the Premier League with Arsenal and later Liverpool, Oxlade-Chamberlain spent the last campaign at Besiktas in Turkey but seems poised for a move again.

Southampton and Sheffield United have both been linked with a move for the former England international.
