Luka Dončić’s former teammate, Grant Williams, picked an opportune moment to begin his basketball card collection.
On Friday, Williams made a splash in the sports card world by pulling one of the most valuable Luka Dončić rookie cards available.
The former Dallas Mavericks forward purchased a box of 2018-19 Panini National Treasures for $10,500. This set is highly sought-after among modern card collectors, with Dončić being the standout player from this series. His rookie patch autographs (RPA) are known to fetch six-figure amounts.
At a convention, Williams shared the story of his incredible find—a Dončić RPA numbered to 10, which is valued at a minimum of $100,000. He mentioned that he’s received offers well beyond that amount.
“Someone offered me $300,000 before I even had it graded,” Williams said. “Another person offered $250,000, and someone else even proposed $500,000.”
Williams, however, is holding off on accepting any offers as he wants to give Dončić the “right of first refusal.” The Charlotte Hornets forward speculated that Dončić might be willing to purchase it for around a million dollars.
Typically, those who open a 10-card box of National Treasures are lucky to break even, but Williams seemed to hit the jackpot on Friday.
It’s a twist of fate that Williams, who was reportedly traded to the Hornets last season after the Mavericks grew frustrated with his constant chatter, ended up pulling such a valuable card.
