Kurt Busch, the former NASCAR champion, was arrested in North Carolina on Monday night after being pulled over for driving while intoxicated. According to police reports, the 46-year-old was clocked driving a 2024 Lexus at 63 mph in a 45 mph zone at around 11:32 p.m. Officers noted that Busch had “red, glassy eyes” and detected a “strong odor of alcohol” on his breath. Busch reportedly admitted to drinking before getting behind the wheel.
Authorities conducted a breathalyzer test, revealing a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.17 percent—more than twice the legal limit in North Carolina. Busch, who had a long and storied career in NASCAR, expressed regret following the incident. “I’m very disappointed in myself, and I apologize to my family, my racing family, and to my fans,” Busch told Fox Sports. He also pledged to cooperate with authorities and contribute to efforts aimed at improving road safety.
Busch’s career came to a sudden halt in 2022 due to a concussion sustained at Pocono Raceway, effectively ending his time on the track. Over his 24-year career, he competed in 776 Cup Series races, earning 34 wins and 339 top 10 finishes. Busch was crowned the 2004 Nextel Cup Series Champion and also triumphed in the 2017 Daytona 500. In 2023, he was honored as one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers, cementing his legacy in the sport.
This arrest marks a troubling chapter for Busch, who has been a prominent figure in the world of motorsports for decades. As the situation unfolds, fans and the racing community alike will be watching closely to see how it impacts the life and reputation of one of NASCAR’s greats.
