Gavin Molloy, a former Shelbourne standout, is optimistic that his transition from the League of Ireland to the Scottish Premiership, akin to Liam Scales’, won’t be their only shared similarity. His recent move from Tolka Park to Aberdeen this summer represents a pivotal chance for Molloy, aged 22, to vie for senior recognition with the Ireland national team. Currently in Portugal for pre-season training with Aberdeen, Molloy joins Jamie McGrath, a prominent figure for the Boys in Green.
Molloy has taken note of how former Shamrock Rovers player Scales used Aberdeen as a platform for his Ireland call-up during his loan from Celtic. Molloy expressed his thoughts to the Daily Record, saying, “Yes, I believe it will enhance my chances of playing internationally. Look at Liam Scales. He came to Scotland and earned his opportunity with the national team. I feel I can achieve that too. I have confidence and belief in myself; that’s where I aim to go to break into the Ireland squad.”
He also highlighted the presence of Jamie McGrath at Aberdeen, stating, “It’s fantastic to have another Irishman like Jamie McGrath here. He returned late from his extended break. Jamie’s a great guy and a talented player.”
Reflecting on his own international aspirations, Molloy admitted, “I’ve never represented Ireland at any level, and I’ve never come close. That’s what motivates me. I’ve kept working hard and stayed focused on my goals. Others were called up, but not me. I’ve maintained my determination. I know my capabilities and where I want to be. There are no hard feelings; I’m simply committed to continuing to give my best.”
Molloy expressed confidence in fitting seamlessly into the Irish national team setup if given the opportunity. “Nathan Collins, Adam Idah, and Jason Knight were all part of my age group. I competed against each of them in emerging talent programs when I was younger,” he noted.
