Huddersfield Town 2, Peterborough United 0: Ben Wiles and Antony Evans lead the Terriers to win.

Huddersfield Town began their League One campaign with a strong 2-0 victory against last season’s play-off finalists, Peterborough United. Antony Evans and Ben Wiles scored first-half goals for the visitors, helping Michael Duff’s team secure a win in a clash between two top promotion contenders.

The Terriers had to weather an early threat from Peterborough, as Ricky-Jade Jones outpaced Michal Helik in a foot race but shot just wide of the far post.

Last season’s League One top scorers, Peterborough United, continued to search for opportunities on the counter-attack, but it was Huddersfield Town who struck first, taking the lead in the 36th minute.

Wiles delivered a cross for Evans, who was making his competitive debut after joining from Bristol Rovers over the summer. Evans shot from just outside the box, with the ball deflected significantly on its way into the net.

Wiles extended Huddersfield’s lead to 2-0 just before halftime with a 20-yard shot through a crowd of players, capitalizing on a blocked attempt that had fallen to him following a corner.

Helik seemed to have added a third goal for Huddersfield after a short corner midway through the second half, but it was disallowed for offside.

Peterborough couldn’t capitalize on that reprieve, even though Darren Ferguson made several changes in a futile attempt to turn the game around.
