How the ideal solution to the 76ers’ predicament may fall into their laps

The Philadelphia 76ers faced significant challenges this season, particularly in coping with Joel Embiid’s extended absence due to a left knee injury. The team’s lack of depth behind the 2023 MVP was the primary reason for their decline in the standings and their struggle to maintain stability in his absence.

Paul Reed’s future with the team is uncertain, especially since the 76ers didn’t advance to the second round, a condition that would have guaranteed his contract for the next two seasons. Additionally, Mo Bamba’s inconsistency and impending free agency highlight the need for the team to solidify their backup plan for Embiid.

In the upcoming 2024 NBA Draft, the 76ers may find an opportunity despite the perceived lack of top-tier talent. With the 16th overall pick, just two spots after the lottery, they should have several appealing options available.

One intriguing prospect who could be available is Zach Edey from Purdue. While his draft projections vary widely, Edey presents an enticing option for the 76ers. Despite concerns about his mobility in today’s NBA, his size and physical attributes suggest he could thrive with the right development.

At 7’4″, Edey is a dominant force on the boards and has shown promise as a scorer, including surprising efficiency from beyond the arc during combine workouts. While Philadelphia has other plans in free agency, they can afford to take a risk with their draft pick. If Edey is still on the board at No. 16, the 76ers should seriously consider selecting him as a high-potential backup for Embiid.
