“I’ve already seen it on social media and stuff, and the internet and stuff and talking about that I might not deserve an opportunity,”
Bronny James’ draft selection by the Lakers was bound to draw intense criticism and accusations of nepotism.
James acknowledged being aware of the online commentary and addressed the criticism during his first official day with the Lakers on Tuesday.
“I’ve already seen it on social media and the internet, people talking about whether I deserve this opportunity,” he stated. “But I’ve faced challenges like this my whole life. It’s nothing new, just more amplified now. I’ll handle it.”
Regarding speculation about playing alongside his father, James clarified that his decision to enter the draft this year, after just one college season, wasn’t influenced by that possibility.
“Rob (Pelinka) mentioned a strong development system here, so I’m focused on coming in, putting in the work, and improving every day,” he said. “Playing with my dad wasn’t a primary consideration.”
Lakers head coach JJ Redick emphasized that Bronny’s place on the team was earned through merit, not favoritism.
“Neither Rob nor I handed Bronny anything,” Redick asserted. “He’s earned this opportunity through hard work.”
James’ contract is expected to be finalized before the Lakers start their Summer League campaign at the California Classic on Saturday, as reported by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
Bronny’s agent, Rich Paul, has been in talks with the Lakers about a multiyear contract that would secure his place on the roster. Paul had previously indicated a preference against a two-way deal for Bronny.
