NFL divisions often see a fair amount of competitiveness, making traditional statistics less predictable when longtime rivals face off. While it’s not uncommon for a lower-ranked team to snatch a win during the season, there are two teams currently facing significant challenges to stay competitive in 2024.
We’re taking a cautious approach in the “Division Wins” market offered by DraftKings:
1. New England Patriots under 1.5 division wins (+110 DraftKings):
Our confidence in the New England Patriots for 2024 is low. The team requires substantial rebuilding and is likely several seasons away from contending in the AFC, especially within the competitive AFC East. Drake Maye is seen as a work in progress and may have limited playtime this season. Jacoby Brissett is a capable choice but lacks the spark needed to inspire confidence, particularly without a strong supporting lineup. Our bet largely hinges on the strength of their division. Despite some changes, Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills remain formidable, ensuring playoff contention. Miami’s explosive offense from last season is anticipated to continue into 2024, while the Jets are expected to improve upon their 7-10 record, assuming Aaron Rodgers’ health. Given these challenges, we anticipate the Patriots struggling to secure wins within their division, making the plus-money odds appealing.
2. Minnesota Vikings under 2.5 division wins (-135 DraftKings):
Our decision to bet against the Minnesota Vikings is similarly based on their tough divisional competition. The NFC North could be one of the most challenging divisions this year. Detroit Lions reached the NFC Championship Game last season and are poised for further improvement in 2024. Green Bay Packers exceeded expectations last season with Jordan Love’s breakthrough, winning a playoff game, and are set to compete among the NFC’s top teams again. The Chicago Bears are well-equipped and anticipate a productive rookie season from top draft pick Caleb Williams. These factors leave little room for Minnesota, who may rely on J.J. McCarthy or Sam Darnold at quarterback. With only two division wins last season, the Vikings’ prospects for 2024 appear even bleaker. We’re fading their chances as they undergo a transitional phase.
