Maple Leafs Provide Uncertain Update on Auston Matthews’ Injury Status
The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing uncertainty regarding Auston Matthews’ return to action, as head coach Craig Berube offered a cautious update on the star forward’s condition. Matthews, who missed the team’s 4-0 victory over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, is still considered “day-to-day” with an upper-body injury, although Berube did not rule him out for the upcoming games against the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens on Friday and Saturday.
In a statement on Thursday, Berube acknowledged the difficulty in predicting Matthews’ timeline for recovery, citing the ambiguity of the situation. “It’s hard for me to answer that question [about Friday and Saturday] knowing what I know right now,” Berube said. “He’s doing OK, but it’s still day-to-day.”
Matthews has been sidelined since the Leafs’ Sunday game against the Minnesota Wild, where he played just over 22 minutes before the injury occurred. Notably, the issue is unrelated to Matthews’ previous wrist surgery, which Berube confirmed earlier this week.
While Matthews has not been Toronto’s top scorer this season, he remains a critical part of the team’s offensive structure. Through 14 games, he has scored 5 goals and 11 points, ranking third in team scoring behind William Nylander and Mitch Marner. As the Leafs prepare for the weekend games, the team is currently second in the Atlantic Division with a 7-5-2 record, trailing the Florida Panthers.
With Matthews’ health still uncertain, the Leafs will likely continue to rely on their depth to stay competitive as they await his potential return to the lineup.
