The Maple Leafs’ Trade of Reaves $4.05 million deal Would Require Everything to Come Apart

The notion that the Maple Leafs would consider trading him after his improved performance doesn’t make sense. Team general manager Brad Treliving was impressed with Reaves when he signed him. Given Reaves’ strong performance in the latter half of last season, it’s unlikely that Treliving’s opinion has changed.

One argument for a potential trade is the addition of larger defensemen like Chris Tanev, who could take over some of the enforcement responsibilities that Reaves usually handles. However, despite these additions, Reaves’ role as a physical presence and locker room leader continues to be valuable to the Maple Leafs.

For a trade to occur, there must be both a seller and a buyer involved.

The idea of moving Reaves also overlooks the realities of the trade market. While it’s one thing to propose that a player is available, finding a team willing to take on his contract is another challenge. Reaves is in the second year of a three-year, $4.05 million deal—a contract that may be difficult to trade, particularly given his age and the physical toll from his style of play.

Moreover, the Maple Leafs signed Reaves for more than just his on-ice performance. His leadership and physical presence were key reasons for bringing him to Toronto. These intangibles are hard to replace, even if his statistics aren’t particularly standout.

In the end, while a trade is always a possibility, there are few reasons to believe it will happen. Reaves performed well in the latter half of last season, and the Maple Leafs likely value the stability and grit he brings. Any rumors about moving him now seem more like off-season speculation meant to attract attention. It would be unlikely for the Maple Leafs front office to have seriously considered such a move.
