National analyst feels this top-25 prospect is ‘must-get’ for Kentucky

It sounds like Mark Pope is taking a strategic approach to recruiting at Kentucky, aiming to blend pursuit of top national talent with a focus on local prospects. By emphasizing the recruitment of local players, he hopes to tap into their deep connection and passion for Kentucky basketball. This strategy not only aims to strengthen the team with talented players but also to build a strong sense of community and pride within the program. Pope seems determined to shape a narrative that highlights both the elite level of competition and the local roots that contribute to the program’s greatness.

Pope stated on BBN Tonight last month, “You have to go find guys where the front of this jersey means something.” There are various ways to accomplish that. On the one hand, it might involve a young man who was raised in Kentucky. Extremely gifted and skilled, and they live this every moment of the day.”

Pope accomplished this by securing Trent Noah and Travis Perry, two of the state’s most gifted players, in the 2024 class.

Pope is now giving top-25 talent Malachi Moreno, a significant national prospect, priority. Pope’s plans for the upcoming years hinge heavily on this guy, a potentially five-star talent in the 2025 class.

Due to this, and his early collaboration with Moreno, he’s considered an essential recruit for Pope and Kentucky.

“At this juncture, it seems imperative for Kentucky to secure Malachi Moreno,” noted Rob Cassidy, national basketball director at Rivals. “Not only for roster needs (though he would certainly bolster them), but for what signing a highly sought-after local talent would signify about the Mark Pope era.”

Moreno, an impressive forward from Great Crossing (Ky.) High School, recently visited Lexington where Pope outlined Kentucky’s vision and emphasized Moreno’s pivotal role in it.

He has made a total of three trips to Kentucky just this year. The most recent visit occurred during Mark Pope’s tenure, which is his only visit under Pope’s leadership.

“Hiring a beloved figure with strong connections to both the state and the program is crucial for gaining local support, so Pope securing Moreno’s commitment seems like an effective way to further energize a fan base that already holds cautious optimism,” Cassidy noted. “Losing Moreno to schools like Indiana, Tennessee, Michigan, or, heaven forbid, Arkansas would be disappointing, especially if the team faces challenges on the court during Pope’s first year at UK.”

Indiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, and other programs are also competing for Moreno’s recruitment, making the process intriguing. However, currently, Kentucky seems to have an advantage over the other contenders.

If Pope manages to secure Moreno, ranked No. 22 in the Rivals150, it would be a significant victory and demonstrate his ability to compete head-to-head with major programs to recruit one of the most skilled players in the class.
