General Manager Brad Treliving seems to have the forward lines mostly figured out, but there is still some uncertainty surrounding the bottom-six roles for the Toronto Maple Leafs. While key players like Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander are guaranteed spots, the composition of the bottom-six, particularly the fourth line, remains unsettled despite some projected lineups.
Potential Changes for the Fourth Line
This offseason has seen speculation about potential changes to the fourth line, with David Kampf and Ryan Reaves mentioned in trade rumors.
David Kampf
In his three seasons with the Maple Leafs, Kampf has been a consistent presence, missing only three games. He plays a crucial role in the team’s defensive strategy and was heavily utilized by former head coach Sheldon Keefe for shutting down opposing lines and penalty killing. Kampf is also strong in faceoffs and was often called upon in overtime situations. With the hiring of new head coach Craig Berube, who may bring a different approach to the team, there could be changes to the fourth line. Given Berube’s background as a bottom-six player, he might adjust these lines to better fit his coaching style.
Although David Kampf is a key player for the Leafs, his role could be at risk, potentially freeing up cap space. His contract, valued at $2.4 million AAV for the next three seasons, might be seen as a hindrance if new head coach Craig Berube prefers a grittier player with a more cost-effective contract.
Ryan Reaves
Ryan Reaves, known for his physical style of play, was signed by the Maple Leafs last offseason for three years at $1.35 million per year. While he adds toughness to the team, the 37-year-old played only 49 games last season and may not be relied upon nightly. Despite his role in energizing the team and fans, management might consider reallocating his salary for better value elsewhere.
Competition for Bottom-Six Roles
Several players are vying for spots in the Leafs’ bottom six. With Reaves aging, Berube might look to inject new energy into that line. Promising young players could get a chance to prove themselves.
Easton Cowan, coming off a standout season with the London Knights in the OHL, is eager to join the Leafs. He’s aiming to impress during training camp and secure a spot with his strong performance and confidence.
Fraser Minten, who briefly played for the Leafs last season before returning to the WHL, could also make the team. He offers a similar defensive role to Kampf but with added offensive potential, which might appeal to management.
Toronto Marlies Prospects
The Leafs’ AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, boasts several prospects who could be called up. Nick Abruzzese, with 11 NHL games under his belt and solid offensive skills, might transition smoothly to a full-time role in the NHL. Alex Steeves, if re-signed, could also be a candidate for a call-up.
Winger Bobby McMann, who became a full-time NHLer last season, is projected to start on the second line next year. Similar opportunities could arise for other Marlies players in the near future.
