Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin is optimistic about the potential impact of Pape Habib Gueye, who is returning from a loan spell.
Gueye, a former Senegal youth international, was signed for £500,000 last summer but only managed seven appearances for Aberdeen last season without scoring. In February, he was loaned out to Kristiansund in Norway, where he rediscovered his form, scoring five goals in 11 matches in the top tier league.
The 24-year-old has resumed training but will not be part of the squad for Aberdeen’s Premier Sports Cup match against East Kilbride on Saturday. However, manager Jimmy Thelin is optimistic about Gueye’s potential contribution in the upcoming weeks. Thelin mentioned, “He (Gueye) returned on Wednesday and has participated in two sessions, but he won’t feature in this match. We have many games coming up in the following weeks, so it’s positive to have him back.”
“He trained well on Wednesday and today. It’s positive to begin getting to know him both as a player and as a person, and we’ll progress step by step from here.”
“He performed well during his loan spell, scoring some impressive goals. He often played more like a winger than a striker in those matches. The league he played in is quite competitive, providing a good platform for him to showcase his abilities consistently.
When asked about the possibility of Gueye playing in a wide position for Aberdeen, Thelin commented, “It’s a possibility because he makes those penetrating runs when he plays centrally. Playing on the wing allows him to engage in one-on-one situations. We’ll see if he can strike a balance between the two roles. He has only had two training sessions, so I’ll need more time to make a decision. Nonetheless, he’s already in good physical condition.”
