NHL Fans React to Maple Leafs Prospect’s Injury After Hard Hit
Toronto Maple Leafs fans are expressing frustration following a concerning incident at the team’s rookie camp. On Thursday, during a scrimmage, the Maple Leafs’ highly anticipated prospect, Ben Danford, was on the receiving end of a heavy hit from Marshall Finnie. The 18-year-old defenseman, who was selected 31st overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, seemed visibly shaken as he was helped off the ice.
The collision, which occurred near the boards, resulted in a significant impact to Danford’s head. After being evaluated on the bench for a potential concussion, he was escorted to the locker room. This event sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with fans voicing their discontent. One commenter sharply criticized the team’s decisions, saying, “Stop inviting bums to prospect camps,” reflecting broader concerns about the handling of rookie players.
Social media buzzed with mixed sentiments following the hit. One user remarked, “First practice and he gets smoked already. Welcome to the big leagues, buddy,” while another questioned the safety protocols, writing, “What are they doing at the Leafs rookie camps? Concussing teenage prospects in September is suboptimal.” Some users also took the opportunity to critique the team’s selection process, with one noting, “They still pick the softest players in the league. Incredible.”
John Gruden, head coach of the Toronto Marlies and overseer of the rookie camp, addressed the situation, acknowledging that he did not have a clear view of the hit but expressed hope for Danford’s recovery. “He’s being evaluated right now. Hopefully, he’ll be OK,” Gruden said. He also conveyed sympathy for Finnie, noting, “I know [Finnie] feels bad and hopefully Danford’s OK.”
Ben Danford had an impressive season with the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey League before joining the Maple Leafs’ camp. Over his last two seasons with the Generals, he accumulated 5 goals and 54 assists in 127 games. Additionally, Danford represented Canada at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in August, contributing to the team’s gold medal victory.
