To be honest, there isn’t much left to say on the release of George Speight and Shane Stevens, even if we know Yellow Bucket followers will be expecting a long debate on the topic. The statement that the time served as punishment is sufficient and that additional punishment would be pointless is made without downplaying the crimes committed or the suffering endured by the victims of the events of 2000.Let’s move on to the important topic of rugby and its current status in Fiji. The thorough hammering of Japan last weekend served as a reminder to all supporters—even the doubters—of the potential of our national team. The good news came when rumours circulated about senior players’ remarks about the team’s poor management in the run-up to the Rugby World Cup and the team’s most recent tests against Georgia and the All Blacks.
None of this is very new, of course. With the exception of the 2007 Rugby World Cup, Fiji Rugby just cannot manage their players well. Due to appalling player management, our history in international rugby has been marked by many embarrassing lows as well as exceptional highs.
We are aware of our potential and our ability to draw in coaches, but handling the day-to-day operations of player care and other logistics has been a major failure! In case you missed it, the 2007 exception included Reverend Jioji Rinakama offering spiritual leadership, Dr. Eddie McCaig handling medical matters, Cathy Wong overseeing performance, and Pio Bosco Tikoisuva serving as manager.
