The Ohio State in-state 2025 target establishes a decision date, and the Buckeyes are hard at work on RB who has committed elsewhere.

As June fades away, July brings a slower pace to Ohio State’s recruiting efforts. While recruiting is never completely dormant, the team can afford a bit more relaxation, with fewer large events filling their days and weekends.

July often reveals the fruits of June’s labor, as seen in recent weeks. Securing a commitment from linebacker Riley Pettijohn highlights the staff’s success in the 2025 cycle, currently leading the nation in recruiting rankings. However, alongside these victories, some setbacks are inevitable, as not every recruit can be signed.

One of the intriguing stories in the 2025 class is the recruitment of in-state safety Trey McNutt. Hailing from Shaker Heights and with family ties to Ohio State, one might assume he would be an easy recruit to land. Yet, McNutt’s situation differs significantly from other local prospects.

Ohio State undoubtedly hopes to keep McNutt close to home for the next few years. His commitment would be enthusiastically welcomed. However, at this stage of his recruitment, such an outcome is uncertain, given the unique path it has taken so far.

Without much delay, Trey McNutt announced on Wednesday via social media that he will reveal his college decision next week, on July 19. The highly regarded five-star safety has narrowed his choices to Florida, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas A&M, and USC, with Oregon currently standing out as the frontrunner.

Ranked as the 19th best player nationally and the top safety in the 2025 class according to the 247Sports Composite, a commitment to Oregon would align with the strong recruiting momentum the Ducks have maintained this month. Coach Dan Lanning and his staff have excelled in attracting top talent to their program, leveraging various strengths beyond just NIL opportunities. Their recent successes are commendable and reflect their effective strategies on the recruiting trail.

If Trey McNutt decides to commit elsewhere, it could evoke similar feelings among Ohio State fans as Justin Hill’s recruitment did. However, it’s important to note that the Buckeyes have commitments from other talented safeties like Faheem Delane, DeShawn Stewart, and Cody Haddad. While landing the top-ranked in-state prospect is a priority, Ohio State’s safety depth won’t be compromised if McNutt chooses another school.

Moreover, McNutt’s recruitment isn’t finalized until signing day. Despite his potential commitment elsewhere, he plans to take an official visit to Ohio State in the fall. This indicates that the Buckeyes will continue to compete for his commitment until the very end.

In another recruitment effort, Ohio State is actively pursuing Anthony Rogers, currently committed to Alabama, as their third running back for the 2025 class. Ranked 110th nationally and sixth among running backs by the 247Sports Composite, Rogers has shown interest in Ohio State since visiting in May. The Buckeyes expect him to return for an official visit this fall, recognizing an opportunity to sway him despite his commitment to Alabama. Adding Rogers would strengthen Ohio State’s running back depth, demonstrating their determination in recruiting efforts.
