JUST NOW: Packers pursue former $54 million free agent which…

The Green Bay Packers are actively exploring options to bolster their roster ahead of training camp, and veteran linebacker Kwon Alexander has emerged as a compelling candidate. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report highlighted Alexander as a bargain-bin free agent who could provide significant value, especially considering his potential availability at a team-friendly price due to his injury history and age.

Alexander, originally drafted in the fourth round out of LSU in 2015, showcased immense promise early in his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His standout performance in his second season, leading the NFL with 108 solo tackles, propelled him to a Pro Bowl appearance in 2017. Despite subsequent injuries, including a torn ACL, Alexander secured a lucrative four-year, $54 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers in 2019.Packers Named Potential Suitor for LB Kwon Alexander

However, injuries continued to plague Alexander during his tenure with the 49ers and subsequent stints with other teams, including the New Orleans Saints. Most recently recovering from a torn Achilles and nearing 30 years old in August, Alexander’s durability remains a concern. Nevertheless, his experience and potential impact could be invaluable, particularly in mentoring younger linebackers like rookie second-round pick Edgerrin Cooper.

The Packers, historically cautious about their linebacker depth, have reason for optimism in 2024. Emerging talents such as former first-round pick Quay Walker and improving linebacker Isaiah McDuffie are complemented by the arrival of Edgerrin Cooper, highly touted for his early performance in offseason workouts. This depth, combined with veteran presence like Eric Wilson, suggests the Packers may not need to make a move for Alexander. Nonetheless, his addition could provide insurance and leadership crucial for a successful season.
