The Phillies re-signed outfielder David Dahl to a minor league deal and assigned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley
The Philadelphia Phillies have brought back outfielder David Dahl on a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, according to a report from Matt Gelb of The Athletic (X link). Dahl, who was waived by the Phillies on July 9 and opted for free agency shortly after, returned to the team after playing only four games in the majors between 2022 and 2023.
Once a highly touted prospect and the No. 10 overall draft pick by the Rockies, Dahl had signed a minor league deal with the Phillies last winter. He performed impressively in Triple-A, boasting a .340/.416/.660 batting line with twelve home runs in 166 plate appearances before his recall. Despite a promising start upon his return to the big leagues, where he hit two home runs in his first three games, Dahl struggled to maintain consistency, batting just .154/.196/.231 in 56 plate appearances thereafter.
Dahl’s career has been marked by potential and setbacks. In 2016, he burst onto the scene with a .315/.359/.500 slash line and showed promise early on, but injuries, including surgeries to remove his spleen, have plagued him. Since 2020, he has struggled with a .200/.237/.318 slash line in the majors, overshadowing his earlier successes.
Despite his challenges, Dahl’s recent strong performance in Triple-A and his initial success upon returning to the Phillies offer hope for a potential resurgence. He now returns to the Triple-A IronPigs with aspirations of working his way back into Philadelphia’s major league plans.
