The Steelers parted ways with JuJu Smith-Schuster after a tumultuous end to his five-season tenure in Pittsburgh. While his on-field performance remained solid, accumulating 5,048 yards on 323 receptions and 26 touchdowns in 63 games, off-field concerns took center stage, likely influencing the team’s decision to let him go after the 2021 season. Despite having promising talents like Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool, the Steelers felt comfortable moving on from JuJu, eventually drafting George Pickens in 2022.
Fast forward to 2024, and the Steelers find themselves in need of reinforcement in the receiver department, particularly after trading Diontae Johnson. With an inexperienced group vying for the second wide receiver spot, including Quez Watkins, Van Jefferson, Calvin Austin, and rookie Roman Wilson, there’s a glaring need for a proven veteran to complement George Pickens and alleviate defensive pressure.
Bringing back their former Pro Bowl wide receiver, JuJu, could address this void. Despite ups and downs since leaving Pittsburgh, he showcased his value as a reliable target in Kansas City, posting 78 catches for 933 yards and 3 touchdowns in his last season. His blocking ability and knack for converting first downs make him an enticing option for the Steelers’ evolving offense. However, concerns linger regarding his age and injury history, which may limit his long-term reliability.
If JuJu becomes available at the right price, a reunion with the Steelers could benefit both parties. His familiarity with the team’s system and potential to contribute as a dependable number-two receiver make him a compelling option. Should the opportunity arise, the Steelers should seriously consider bringing him back to bolster their receiving corps and enhance their offensive capabilities.
