In a significant setback for American tennis, Taylor Fritz, currently ranked No. 4 in the PIF ATP Rankings, has withdrawn from the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC in Acapulco due to a persisting abdominal injury.
Fritz revealed that he has been grappling with this abdominal issue since the week before the Dallas Open. Despite attempting to play through the discomfort, the injury has not improved, compelling him to make the difficult decision to withdraw. He expressed his disappointment, stating, “Acapulco has always been one of my favorite events and I’m really sorry to let the tournament down.”
The abdominal injury first became a concern during the Dallas Open, where Fritz attributed the strain to the transition between different types of tennis balls used in tournaments. He noted, “It was my oblique. It was caused because of the balls that were supposed to be the same… but they just weren’t. They were like the deadest balls ever.”
This withdrawal raises concerns about Fritz’s participation in upcoming tournaments, including the prestigious Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open. The tennis community will be closely monitoring his recovery, hoping for his swift return to the court.
