30 Greatest Dallas Mavericks in History, Ranked by Player Efficiency Rating (PER)
ESPN’s John Hollinger developed PER, which “sums up all a player’s positive accomplishments, subtracts the negative ones, and returns a per-minute rating of a player’s performance.”
PER is a fascinating statistic that does a solid job summarizing a player’s effectiveness throughout their career.
With that in mind, here’s a ranking of the top 30 Dallas Mavericks in franchise history based on PER, with a minimum of 100 games played.
30. Jalen Brunson – 15.8
One of the most heartbreaking moments of the 2022 NBA offseason was when former Dallas Mavericks guard Jalen Brunson chose to sign with the New York Knicks in free agency. Dallas had multiple opportunities to extend Brunson during the 2021-22 season but opted to wait and see how things unfolded.
Brunson ultimately secured a massive contract with the Knicks, and he has quickly outplayed that deal, earning a big extension.
During Brunson’s four years in Dallas, he averaged 11.9 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 0.6 steals per game while shooting 49.4 percent from the field and 37.3 percent from three-point range.
Brunson appeared in 277 regular-season games over those four years, mostly coming off the bench. He was remarkably consistent in leading the second unit and progressively showed signs of stardom as his career developed.
Brunson embodied the steady hand the Mavs often relied on, and fans will always wonder what could have been if Brunson and Luka Doncic had stayed together longer.
